Speaking out for small and medium businesses
The UK may have emerged from recession, but growth is slow and the institute’s 2010 IFA Business Barometer survey found businesses under pressure: lack of customers, HMRC bureaucracy, finding good staff and affordable sources of lending, all emerged as significant barriers to the ongoing health of small and medium businesses. Members have strong views on what can be done to alleviate these problems, and over the next few months you can look forward to reading about institute plans to lobby government for change.
Speakers at the event included Peter Ibbetson, chairman of Small Business Banking at RBS and NatWest, George Derbyshire from the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies, and Phil Orford, chief executive of the Forum of Private Business. They each commented on the results and shared their particular perspectives on the recent economic turmoil, all of which you can read about in the next issue of Financial Accountant.
The results of the Business Barometer were announced at the latest in what has been a very successful series of one-day IFA regional conferences, on the theme Changing Times; Building Capability. Feedback from members who have attended these events has been wholly positive: you seem to have relished the opportunities for CPD, enjoyed networking with follow-professionals and the high profile sponsors who have been on hand to offer advice and support.
The last in the 2010 series of conferences will shortly take place on 15 September in Southampton, so if you live or work in the vicinity and you have not already attended one of these one-day events, now is the time to book your place. The presentations and workshops offered by CCH, Companies House, Grant Thornton, HMRC Online Services, Lexis Nexis, RBS, and other sponsors, have proven invaluable for many IFA members. So why not join them – before it’s too late.
